Pilotar aviones de transporte regional es más atractivo para los fanáticos de los simuladores de vuelo que les gusta volar de acuerdo con las reglas de vuelo por instrumentos (IFR), pero tienen un tiempo limitado disponible. Los aviones de transporte regional dan servicio a las conexiones de aeropuertos más pequeños a los grandes centros y viceversa y son vuelos intensivos en el mundo real, así como en el simulador.

Un representante popular de esta categoría de aviones es la línea CRJ de Bombardier (actualmente Mitsubishi) de 50 a 100 pasajeros. Desarrollados originalmente para reemplazar la gama de turbohélice más incómoda y ruidosa de esta clase, los hermosos y elegantes aviones CRJ eran de particular interés para las aerolíneas que deseaban ofrecer la sensación de un jet en rutas cortas.

Su diseño específico con los motores en la parte trasera, el ala baja y el fuselaje delgado, que solo permitían arreglos de asientos 2-2, los hacía lucir deportivos y como jets ejecutivos.

Su aviónica y sus sistemas han sido de vanguardia en el momento de su desarrollo y altamente automatizados para reducir la carga de trabajo de los pilotos en los horarios ajustados y los tiempos de respuesta más cortos.

A los pilotos les gusta volarlos porque son poderosos, ágiles y un placer poder volarlos manualmente. También exigen más habilidad de vuelo que un Airbus o Boeing moderno, debido a que la capacidad para automatizar el vuelo es limitada. Por ejemplo, no es posible controlar la velocidad aérea durante el vuelo. Además, los aeropuertos a los que vuelan pueden requerir más vuelos manuales debido a la falta de instrumentos de navegación o entornos escénicos.

El Aerosoft CRJ 550/700 para el Microsoft Flight Simulator actual se ha construido sobre la experiencia de los desarrolladores de la familia CRJ ofrecida para FSX y Prepar3D.
