Explore the many varied faces of Germany's second-largest city!
U-Bahn Hamburg U3
This distinctive and picturesque route describes a circular path around Hamburg but also has a small branch that runs off from Barmbek towards Wandsbek-Gartenstadt. The U3 length is around 20.6km, with 5km being underground. Most of the services head for Wandsbek-Gartenstadt, but a few concentrate on driving the full circle of the U3.
The U1 and U3 cross each other five times, with two of them being a cross-platform interchange which means that you are able to make many varied service trips using both the U1 and the U3.
The U3 includes 25 stations, with eight of them underground and served by the DT5 train. Along with these distinctive stations there are two depots: the one at Barmbek being the main depot of the Hochbahn and the other at Saarlandstrasse where accumulator-locomotives are maintained. The U3 was the first line of the Hamburg U-Bahn, with the most historical section opened in 1912.
It runs through Hamburg city centre and along the embankment of the mighty Elbe river, one of the most visited tourist areas in Hamburg. Other areas include the Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse district in the world, where the buildings are built on timber-pile foundations, the Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) and the St. Pauli Landungsbruecken, the St. Pauli landing bridges which are the largest landing site for the Port of Hamburg.
U-Bahn Hamburg U1 route updates and new features
The U1 has been upgraded, with a fully revised Messberg Station and its length updated. The rail network near Berne has been updated, along with guard rails where required around the network. Traffic lights have been added and all the stations have been revised in accordance to the new S-Bahn route map, along with minor but important details such as an authentic font for the DFI departure boards.
Along with these upgrades the U1 and U3 have three new AI vehicles added:
- DT3E/N
- LB6 freight car for the battery locomotive to pull
- DB Regio double-deck coach
The DT5 driving physics have been improved and the destinations of the DT4 and DT5 have been revised, as have the distinctive announcements voiced by Ingrid Metz-Neun as well as the station camera that is streamed to the train. The geometry of the majority of objects and the vegetation have also been revised to enhance the visuals and give better performance, especially in the areas of Kellinghusenstrasse and Volksdorf.
U-Bahn Hamburg U1
The U-Bahn Hamburg U1 line is approximately 55 km in length (34 miles). This makes it not only the longest U-Bahn service of the northern German metropolis of Hamburg, but also the longest U-Bahn service in Germany.
Developed with permission and supported by the Hochbahn AG, the Hamburg Transport Authority, the route is an authentic reproduction of the U1 line starting in the north at Norderstedt Mitte. The line runs south into the city centre at Jungfernstieg, onto Hauptbahnhof Süd and then heads north-east out of town to Volksdorf where it divides into two branches, the left one leading to Ohlstedt and the right to Großhansdorf. The U1 serves 47 stations. The line was built in 1914 and the 47th station opened in 1998 with the opening of line to Norderstedt.
In less than 90 minutes passengers get to see many different faces of the city. Starting in the neighbouring city of Norderstedt you pass through residential neighbourhoods then wealthy districts such as Harvestehude at the beginning of the downtown underground section. Shortly after, downtown areas are served by the U1, which stops at important transport hubs such as Jungfernstieg station and Hamburg central station. From there, the U1 serves various densely populated residential districts. There are 15 tunnel stations in the central districts.
