L'aéroport de Lukla doit son existence au fait d'être situé à côté du Mt. Everest et la plupart d'alpinistes l'utilisent comme premier point de départ pour escaler cette impressionnante montagne.
Pendant la saison des escalades (octobre/novembre), des petits avions (la plupart des Twins Others) doivent décoller de l'aéroport au but de 15 minutes car il y a seulement que 4 postes de stationnement et il y a beaucoup d'autres en attente pour atterrir. C'est un aéroport que peut être très congestionné. Lukla est aussi l'aéroport avec des lignes régulières le plus haut du monde. Combinez tout ça avec le fait de sa fermeture en cas de mauvais temps et vous saurez pourquoi il peut être aussi congestionné.
Voler vers Lukla est dangereux et complexe dans des situations météos idéales ; la plupart de nos testeurs se sont méfiés de cette condition et à la fin la colin était couverte des restes des avions écrasés ! Effectivement, tout que vous faites a cette altitude doit être planifié et considéré. Atterrir dans une piste en pente signifie que vous devez faire l'arrondi d'une autre façon. Le décollage d'une piste aussi courte avec un avion monomoteur c'est pas facile du tout, en prenant compte que la piste fait seulement 3000 pieds de longueur et finit dans une vallée (jetez un œil aux chutes d'eau). Même le roulage aux postes de stationnement est dangereux car une partie de la voie de roulage est en pente. Enfin, vous serez un peu déçu au moment de commencer à décoller et atterrir de cet aéroport, cependant, une fois que vous dominerez la technique, vous deviendrez un meilleur pilote et vous aurez la possibilité de découvrir une nouvelle région.
