Welcome to the "old" Quito Airport (SEQU), the airport notorious for its nerve-wrecking landings! Having ceased operations by now, this airport is (was) right in the middle of the city of Quito, making it one of the highest and most challenging airports in the world! We’ve made this scenery to save a little piece of aviation history in the flight simulator world.
This Quito airport scenery is a highly accurate rendition of the airport the way it was on its final days of operation. Photos from the active times were used to create particularly detailed terminal buildings and textures of the surroundings. A hand painted elevation mesh ensures that the hills and slopes near the runway can be presented in a lifelike way. And due to custom landclass data, the airport fits almost seamlessly into the default scenery.
Opened in 1960, “Mariscal Sucre International Airport” was the largest airport in Ecuador and one the busiest in South America. Since 2000, it served as the main hub for TAME. Its location within the city and surrounded by mountains impeded expansions and caused several, sometimes severe incidents during approaches. Therefore, the airport ceased operations on February 19, 2013, moving them to the new airport of the same name located outside of Quito’s borders.
Historically accurate model of the airport and it's buildings
High definition passenger terminal building, carefully modeled from reference photos taken while the airport was still in operation
Highly detailed apron ground textures, with aircraft type markings at gates true to what they were during the final days of operation
Immediate airport surroundings and industrial areas
Custom ”Quito style” landclass with autogen annotation for around the airport to improve blending to the default scenery
Hand painted elevation mesh to realistically depict the hill and slope just north of Runway 17/35
In addition we are offering a „Vintage“ data set for NavdataPro. This old cycle includes the last published Nav Data of the old Quito airport. Please note that this cycle will overwrite the current one. If you wish to go back to the present data cycle you can do this at any time through the NavDataPro app. To download the vintage cycle please follow this >> Link <<.
Conclusion by avsim.com: "Here is an interesting scenery, like no other I have dealt with to-date, that I received from Aerosoft for review. On the one hand, it should attract simmers who enjoy testing their skills in mountainous navigation approach and departure procedures. On the other, this scenery boasts a "historic procedures!" feature on the product cover, with a control tower and a scenic city landscape behind it. Looks promising."
Conclusion by simmingly.com: "Approaching Quito is well designed and textured. Great attention to detail has been ensured, and all throughout the airport you can see small details added that contribute to the immersion. The surroundings of the airport are well modeled and shown in the sim. The product is excellent on frame rates and the performance on the test system was brilliant. At 23.34 euros incl VAT or 19.29 excl VAT this product is well worth the money. It adds a new excellently designed challenge to our simulated skies."
Conclusion by simreviews.com: "The new Aerosoft Approaching Quito easily beats the old add on by Boris Forero hands down. Other reviews were very critic concerning the autogen and I concur with the criticism.(...)But what is Quito really about? Quito is all about the approach and that is what this add on recreates well."
